Best practices from Japan

Japan is a world leader in innovative urban design and planning. The Land of the Rising Sun successfully meets the challenges and provides a clean, functional and low crime city environment. Therefore a series of articles will focus on best practices in Japan.

One example of how local authorities solved a problem is that of the sewage system in the country. Until the 80s of last century in Japan were used geometrically correct and standardized sewer lids. Standardization of sewer caused protests, but an enterprising clerk offered citizens to start creating models of lids themselves and thus solved the problem. Since then, the art has reached a new level in Japan. The wood models are stored in the Central Library and about the beautiful works are devoted even books.
